Abstract

Poverty in the Pekalongan City should be viewed as urban poverty, whose vulnerability is a social construct. By applying ethnographic methods in four villages, this study addresses the social relations that occur in productive activities in the Pekalongan City, thus creating poverty instead of prosperity. The study's findings, interpreted through the economic-political perspective of Henry Bernstein, indicate that the dynamics of poverty in the Pekalongan City are constructed through ecological conditions, modes of production, social relations of production, and development interventions.
